Melanie Yuill reports:
Dozens of identity theft cases are being reported in Butte.
Butte-Silver Bow Sheriff John Walsh says there are 82 reports of credit card or debit card fraud in the area.
The investigation is being handled by the U.S. Secret Service.
Sheriff Walsh says the problem appears to be coming from electronic readers that consumers swipe their credit or debit cards through at businesses, but he does not know which specific businesses are affected.
Walsh says many of the actual thefts occurred as far back as six or seven months ago, but whoever stole the information put it out just before the Christmas season.

Once again: so much for those who issue breach reports with reassurances like “we have no evidence of any misuse of the data.” Sometimes it takes a while before the information is actually misused, as this case seems to demonstrate.
