Jeffery H. Sloman, Acting United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, and Michael J. Folmar, Acting Special Agent in Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation, announced today the arrest of defendant Luis Robert Altamarino.
According to the Indictment filed on August 4, 2009, Altamarino was a former employee of United Way of Miami-Dade (“UWMD”). He was employed as a computer specialist from July to December 2007. On December 24-25, 2008, approximately one year after he left UWMD’s employ, Altamarino is alleged to have accessed United Way’s network without authorization. He deleted numerous files from their servers, including the contact information of many of UWMD’s donors. Altamarino also allegedly disabled UWMD’s telephone voice mail system, which prevented callers from leaving messages for UWMD and prevented UWMD employees from accessing their voice mail accounts.
The press release did not indicate how Altamarino allegedly gained access to the network over a year after the termination of his employment.
