Concerns about the privacy of women seeking abortions stopped clinicians alerting authorities to botched sterilisations at Wanganui Hospital, MPs have been told.
Whanganui District Health Board chief executive Memo Musa told Parliament’s health select committee yesterday that the board had not followed proper procedures when appointing Czech-trained surgeon Roman Hasil, who was later found to have lied about his past.
Last month a damning report by the health and disability commissioner found the board failed to check Dr Hasil’s background, supervise him or react quickly enough to concerns raised by nursing staff about his drinking and his rough treatment of patients.
