Separate reports issued at the same time Wednesday by New Brunswick’s ombudsman and British Columbia’s information and privacy commissioner have found that their governments failed to protect the personal health information of B.C. and New Brunswick residents when a courier lost tapes containing health information.
According to the news release, a courier package of computer tapes containing individuals’ personal health insurance information, shipped from New Brunswick to B.C. in October 2007, did not arrive. The affected individuals, however, were not advised until more than six weeks after the tapes left New Brunswick.
The tapes, which were never found, contained information of several hundred New Brunswick and B.C. residents, but were not protected by encryption.
