On September 23rd, CIGNA HealthCare informed the Maryland Attorney General’s Office that it had been notified by law enforcement that an individual had stolen some residents’ personal information and used it to file fraudulent tax returns in another state.
The individual, who was arrested and charged, is the brother of a former CIGNA employee who stopped working for the company in 2006. The company suspects that the former employee misappropriated personal information including names, addresses, and Social Security numbers of an unspecified number of CIGNA members during his employment.
Affected CIGNA members were notified by mail on September 10th and offered free credit monitoring services and ID theft insurance.
