Andrew Galvin reports:
A former payroll manager at Advanced Medical Optics was sentenced to five years in state prison today after he pleaded guilty last month to charges that he stole more than $487,000 from his employer, prosecutors said.
Robert Lee Winn, 43, of Norco, used the Santa Ana company’s payroll computer system to make direct deposits into a business checking account for an unrelated company that he owned. He then went back into the computer system and changed the name of the payees after these transactions had been processed.
He changed the name of the payees to those of current and former Advanced Medical Optics employees in an effort to cover his crimes, prosecutors said. In doing so, Winn put some of his former colleagues into difficulty by making them responsible for taxes on income they never received, prosecutors said.
