On April 1, Massachusetts Financial Services Company notified (pdf) the New Hampshire Attorney General that they were informed by a customer on February 23 that an error in their online tax reporting system allowed Form 1099 tax forms of certain accounts to be viewed by an owner of one or more of these accounts. The information included on the inadvertently linked tax forms was limited to the customer’s name, address, account number, and certain tax reporting amounts. The exposed tax forms reportedly did not include any social security or tax identification numbers.
MFS’s analysis of their records indicated that the group of linked accounts was only accessed by the customer who alerted them to the error. The company offered those affected free credit monitoring.
