Personal information of almost 900 people was given to a public-housing resident [in Virginia] who requested a list of those who had been banned from Hampton Redevelopment and Housing Authority property.
Hampton police and the housing authority maintain a list of people who have been banned by police from Section 8 and public-housing property in the city, usually because of criminal activity, said the authority’s Executive Director Frank Lofurno. The list of names is public information, and it was requested by a resident whose acquaintance was banned, Lofurno said.
However, police and the housing authority maintain more information than just the names. The information is in a private Microsoft Excel spreadsheet document, which includes a column that has Social Security numbers. A housing authority employee printed out the spreadsheet, accidentally including the Social Security numbers with the names, Lofurno said. The printed pages were sent recently in the mail to the resident, who handed them to WVEC 13 News.
