Chicago Fire and Police Department Being Investigated For Horrible Breach of Medical Ethics!

Posted on August 22, 2009 by Dissent

There is a group of individuals have come together to right a done against the dignity of a human being It is called: Justice and Dignity For Christopher Cornstalk. Mr. Cornstalk was a member of the Odawa Nation, Turtle Clan.  That group is made up of loving human beings, some who are Native American and some who are not.  They have come together  because a Native American in a local Chicago hospital was taken advantage of in a despicable manner. This individual who happened to be Native American was dying and his nurse in a horrible violation of ethics and human decency posted pictures of him asking: “Did you Know this Alcoholic Indian?” This was posted on Facebook. After being contacted about this cruel and obscene post Facebook deleted it but not before hundreds of other individual members of the Chicago Medical and Emergency Response community had posted their cruel comments joking about the site.

Read more on The Examiner.

Note: the names of the individual who allegedly created the site as well as those who posted to it are listed on other sites. From what I’ve read on this case, it’s not clear to me whether HHS is investigating this as a HIPAA breach as well.

What hospital idd the Nurse work for? Who could believe the staff provided care if they were capable of such crimes? Maybe Christopher’s death was more from negligence/malpractice?!?! I certainly don’t want myself or my loved ones to be “treated” at such an establishment!!

I don’t know, Dorothy, although her name is listed on a number of web sites discussing the matter. The Chicago Fire Department responded to allegations with an internal investigation and reported that the people in the pictures and who had posted were not members of the CFD, with one exception, and they were investigating that member’s actions to see if there was a violation of confidentiality, etc. You can see the CFD’s response here.

I do not know if Mr. Cornstalk’s family filed any HIPAA complaints with HHS, but I really do hope this whole matter is investigated and dealt with as it is a blight on all responsible health care providers.
