WXII12.com reports that some people notified of the UNC Chapel Hill breach had no idea that their data had been shared and had not consented to it:
Bev Olson, who lives in Forsyth County, said her information was shared with UNC without her knowledge after she had a mammography performed.
“I think there’s been a HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) violation because I never signed a release to have my information shared with six other states,” Olson said. “They have used my personal information when I don’t feel like they needed to. They were sloppy and cavalier in how they handled it. I didn’t know I was part of a research study.”
Olson said along with her Social Security number, her date of birth, health insurance status and other medical information were shared with the registry.
