Williams College in Williamstown reports a recent laptop theft. The laptop, which was stolen when an employee left it in a parked car in Boston on October 3, contained the names and Social Security numbers of 750 individuals from 39 states and several foreign countries.
The college notified the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office and affected individuals and arranged for credit monitoring and credit restoration if it is needed, but the letter to individuals did not tell those affected that the laptop had been stolen from a parked car in Boston, reminding us once again why we need a national law that does require entities to provide a description of the breach that reveals the conditions under which the breach occurred.
