Australian businesses may soon be forced to tell their customers if their personal details have been stolen, under proposed new laws to combat identity theft.
One of the world’s biggest technology security companies, Symantec Corp, says it has been approached to assist the federal government with “advice and support” in drafting privacy legislation.
Chief executive Enrique Salem said Australia was expected to follow the US lead by forcing businesses to inform their customers if their personal details were illegally obtained by a third party.
