State insurance fraud officials said Tuesday they have arrested 10 South Floridians accused of using two stolen Social Security numbers to find jobs. State regulators suspect 30 others used the same two numbers and expect to apprehend more individuals.
Officials said the case exemplifies the most common type of identity theft in the state: Personal information stolen from government-issued documents.
The Social Security numbers belonged to two young women, one an Orlando resident and another living out of state, said Jennifer Hirst, spokeswoman for the Florida Department of Financial Services, which conducted the investigation that led to the arrests. While Hirst said officials do not know how those charged obtained the stolen Social Security numbers, but that it’s likely they came from professional document forgers.
