Tina Hinz reports:
Reports of credit card fraud keep rolling into the Cedar Falls police department.
About 100 victims had come forward as of noon Wednesday, said Police Chief Jeff Olson. Many are from the Cedar Falls area.
Illegal charges, ranging from less than $100 to more than $1,000, have popped up in multiple states, including Arizona, California, Connecticut, Georgia, New York, Maryland, Michigan and Texas, as well as outside the country, in Canada and Serbia, Olson said.
And the suspects aren’t simply using card numbers to make online purchases.
“These are card swipes,” Olson said. “They’re actually manufacturing credit cards is what they’re doing and then obviously somehow distributing them or selling them all over.”
Officers are working with credit card companies. A computer forensic team is looking at the credit card processing path for some Cedar Falls businesses to try to determine where a breach of information occurred.
