About 13,000 people will be getting notices from University Hospital of a potential breach in privacy because of a missing data tape, even if it appears unlikely that it was actually taken or that anyone could use the data, an official said Thursday.
The tape is one of two backups created for technical lab data for April 2008. It went missing from University’s off-site data storage vendor, Augusta Data Storage Inc., in March, said Ed Burr, vice president for legal affairs. A search there and internally at University failed to turn up the tape, which is about the size of two dominoes.
