Hoosiers Can Claim Dumped Medical Records

Posted on July 2, 2010 by Dissent

From 6News:

Patients in Indiana now have a new way to retrieve sensitive information in medical records that have been dumped illegally.

The attorney general’s office sorted through tens of thousands of records after investigating four cases where paper and electronic files were abandoned in Bartholomew, Shelby and Marion counties, 6News’ Rafael Sanchez reported.

The state’s Identity Theft Unit has created a searchable database listing the names of health care professionals whose records ended up in state custody.

Read more on the IndyChannel.
The article mentions some of the specific cases involved:

Elmer Manalo, who lost his medical license in 2008 after federal agents raided his Indianapolis and Greensburg offices. The attorney general’s office took custody of boxes of patient files dating from 2000 to 2008 that they said Manalo left behind.

Other files once belonged to the now-closed facility known as Open MRI in Franklin, but were found in a garbage bin in Shelby County, exposing at least 1,500 people to identity theft, authorities said.

The Grey Clinic once operated on Indianapolis’ west side, but its files were turned over to the state in December, authorities said. Among the files are graphic pictures belonging to patients seeking help for sexual dysfunction.

The database can reportedly be found on the attorney general’s website, but I don’t see any link to it. If anyone finds it, perhaps you could post a link to it in the comments section.
