Destination Hotels & Resorts breach report raises an eyebrow

Posted on August 12, 2010 by Dissent

The Destination Hotels & Resorts breach reported back in June as affecting 700 people nationally reportedly affected 470 residents of New Hampshire – even though none of the affected properties are in New Hampshire.

According to the breach disclosure filed by the chain’s law firm, Proskauer Rose,  with the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office,  the breach affected 22 properties in Arizona, California, Colorado, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, South Carolina, Texas, Vermont, and Washington.

The hotels affected were: the Carolina Inn, the Driskill Hotel, Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa, Hamilton Park Hotel & Conference Center, Hotel ICON, Inn and Spa at Loretto, the Inverness Hotel and Conference Center, L’Auberge Del Mar Resort and Spa, Manor Vail Lodge, Miramonte Resort & Spa, Resort at Squaw Creek, Paul J. Rizzo Conference Center, Skamania Lodge, Stowe Mountain Lodge, Suncadia Resort, Tarrytown House Estate & Conference Center, Tempe Mission Palms Hotel and Conference Center, Vail Cascade Resort & Spa, Wild Dunes Resort, Destination Resorts Snowmass, Destination Resorts Vail, and the Gant.

Color me curious or skeptical, but if 470 people in New Hampshire were affected and dozens who stayed at the Driskill Hotel were affected, how likely is it that the national total was 700?

Attorneys for DHR have not responded to an e-mail inquiry about the total number of customers notified of or affected by this breach.  If I get a response, I’ll update this.

Can’t wait to see the mandatory notices to NY, MD, Wisconsin and Maine. Maybe a FOIA to CA would show a few more . Why the secret now? The disclosure is out. Be an industry leader and rise to the occassion and make this right.
