Update: Illinois ATM losses linked to some ALDI stores

Posted on September 19, 2010 by Dissent

This appears to be related to the breach previously reported here a few days ago.

Evelyn Holmes reports:

More victims have come forward regarding a case of debit card fraud in suburban Wheeling.

Hundreds of people lost thousands of dollars, and Sunday, Chicago police were offering up tips to help protect against scam artists.

The story is the same in all the cases: residents used their debit cards at a local business and then noticed large ATM withdrawals from their bank accounts.

[…]

Batavia-based national grocery store chain Aldi issued a statement Friday acknowledging they were recently notified that the security of a limited number of debit card terminals at some stores may have been compromised, and they’ve removed terminals that may have been affected.

Read more on ABC.

The statement on ALDI’s web site says:

ALDI was recently notified that the security of a limited number of debit card terminals at some stores may have been compromised through tampering designed to steal customer’s payment card information. ALDI has conducted a thorough review of all stores nationwide and removed terminals that may have been affected.

ALDI is committed to protecting our customers and their electronic information. Payment card companies have been notified so they can take appropriate steps such as monitoring accounts or reissuing cards. In addition, we have implemented additional security measures to prevent this type of attack from occurring again.

We recommend customers review their account and report any unauthorized activity immediately to their issuing bank and local law enforcement authorities. Customers with questions about their accounts should contact their bank or payment card company directly for more information. We regret any inconvenience this may cause our valued customers.

ALDI is working closely with law enforcement officials to assist in their ongoing investigation, and in order to protect the integrity of the investigation, ALDI is unable to share additional details at this time.
