Two women pleaded guilty Tuesday to stealing the income tax refunds of dozens of people, some of whom were clients at an H&R Block in East Chicago.
Francesca Foster, 33, and Rosetta Yvonne Buchanan, 36, described at their change of plea hearings in the U.S. District Court in Hammond how they took in about $100,000 each through the scheme.
Foster worked at H&R Block during the 2009 tax season and at the end, took client information with her, she testified. She waited until this year to use that information to file about 50 to 60 income tax returns online before the clients had a chance to do so themselves. Foster said she wasn’t able to collect on all the returns because banks became suspicious.
