Maria Will knows to be careful on the internet, especially with private information like bank account and Social Security numbers.
“Anybody can put an address in and pull up anything,” said Will.
But she didn’t realize some of that protected information can be found on a government website.
In at least one case, there was a Social Security number on the Duval Clerk of Court’s website. “Old cases, you will find it there because they were required back then to be in there,” said Jim Fuller, clerk of the court for Duval County.
The case with the number was recorded with the clerk in 1997, when that private information was required.
Fuller said documents recorded from about 2002 through today have been carefully checked for personal and banking information, but the system isn’t foolproof.
