Lloyd Mudiwa reports:
Under the Health Act 2007, the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) has the remit for setting standards for all aspects of health information and to monitor compliance with those standards.
Prof Jane Grimson, Director of Health Information at HIQA, told Irish Medical Times that as part of this work, the Authority has developed and published guidance around Privacy Impact Assessments (PIAs). Launching the new guidelines on how to protect people’s privacy within healthcare services, Prof Grimson said: “It has been estimated internationally that up to 30 per cent of a country’s total health budget is spent on health information. This incorporates collecting, storing, managing and searching for it. It is, therefore, essential that it’s managed as efficiently and effectively as possible in order to ensure value for money. PIAs make an important contribution to this.”
