“Ballsy” ID thief gets nine years for ripping off 750 victims

Posted on January 26, 2011 by Dissent

Laura Italiano reports the follow-up to a case previously reported on this blog:

When 28-year-old Iguosade Osahon was busted last summer for stealing the IDs of 750 victims across the country, the eloquent crook conceded to cops, “What can I say? You’ve got me by the balls.”

His words proved prophetic: Today, Osahon — who stole more than $500,000 — was sentenced in Manhattan to up to nine years prison for his sophisticated, three-year online scheme.

[…]

Osahon had purchased victims’ identifying information — including Social Security numbers and dates of birth, from online ID theft traffickers, Vance said.

The ballsy crook then used the information to get credit reports for the victims, which would give him enough additional information — including checking account numbers and home equity credit line information — to loot the victims’ accounts.

The New York County District Attorney’s Office also issued a press release on today’s sentencing that indicates that Osahon had been convicted of

  • Computer Tampering in the First Degree, a class C felony, one count
  • Grand Larceny in the Second Degree, a class C felony, one count
  • Identity Theft in the First Degree, a class D felony, one count
  • Scheme to Defraud in the First Degree, a class E felony, one count

Sentenced to three to nine years in prison, Osahon was also ordered to pay $249,941 in restitution and to forfeit $50,000 worth of assets.
