Financial aid hacked; fraud scheme is under active investigation

Posted on February 18, 2011 by Dissent

Gretchen Smail reports:

A hacker (or group of hackers) recently attempted to tamper with the financial aid programs offered through the Solano Community College website.

The cyber attack happened early in the spring 2011 semester. Students were quickly notified of the fraud via alerts on the Solano website.

“It appears that the person(s) of interest was not successful in victimizing any students,” because of the alert that was sent out, said Steven J. Dawson, Solano College’s Chief of Police. Dawson said that although he cannot disclose the identity of the person or persons of interest, they are now aware of a “fairly large” student financial aid loan fraud scheme. Dawson said that the fraud is more than just a one-time issue.

“It is an active investigation, positively so,” Dawson said. “It is a lengthy process. I can’t give a time estimate. It can take as much as a year.”

Dawson said that as soon as they have solidified their information and proof, they will be seeking legal action.

There does not seem to be any notice up on the college’s web site at this time.
