Hacker sentenced to 10 years in prison

Posted on July 8, 2011 by Dissent

There are so many press releases these days about people being sentenced for ID theft or hacking that I often just skim them, but this one caught my eye. Mark Morris reports on the sentencing of Sael Mustafa

… According to prosecutors, Mustafa hacked into websites of several businesses, including that of the Capital Grille restaurant chain. Once there, he accessed email addresses and passwords.

Armed with that information, Mustafa then logged onto websites of major credit card companies and began testing whether the stolen information matched customer information on those sites. It worked repeatedly, investigators found.

With access to credit accounts assured, Mustafa and others bought gift cards and airline tickets and used the account to make wire transfers.

A Capital Grille spokesman has said that the company has taken additional steps to enhance security on its website.
