VA: Spotsylvania school employees’ personal information was available online

Posted on January 6, 2012 by Dissent

There’s been an exposure breach involving Spotsylvania school employees’ personal information. Yesterday, Fredericksburg.com reported:

The division began mailing letters to employees about the security breach this afternoon and expects to have all of them mailed by tomorrow morning, schools spokeswoman Rene Daniels said in response to my inquiry.

An employee discovered the problem on Dec. 23 and division staff immediately moved to address the issue, shutting down the internal system known as “self serve” that contains personal information. The system was shut down until staff identified what it presumed to be the problem.

Today, Pamela Gould reports that the exposed information was information on electronic W-2 forms: name, address Social Security Number, how much the employee paid in federal and state taxes, etc. Gould reports that the division employs about 3,000 people, but only those who had received their W-2 forms electronically for 2009 and 2010 were affected, and the district did not reveal how many people were affected.
