Elinor Mills has a round-up of quotes from multiple sources that all suggest that having a data breach generally isn’t fatal to a business – although there are, of course, exceptions.
Not surprisingly, my favorite quote is from Adam Shostack:
“The reason we’re struggling as an industry is that we cover up the failures,” said Adam Shostack, blogger and co-author of ‘The New School of Information Security.” “An awful lot of companies are getting breached but what do we know about those breaches?”
“Data breach” may not be a dirty word anymore, but some entities do not seem to have gotten the memo and still stonewall or attempt to cover up breaches. We’ll all be better off when the real dirty word is “coverup.”
