A new measure to help stop the spread of sexually transmitted diseases among incarcerated individuals and the general public may soon become law if a West Side senator has her way.
State Sen. Kimberly Lightford’s (4th) plan would require the Illinois Department of Public Health and the state’s Department of Corrections to work together and develop a procedure to notify people who’ve been in contact with an inmate who has an STD and to recommend testing.

HB 4453, passed both the House and Senate and was sent to Gov. Pat Quinn for approval, but I do not see where it’s been signed into law yet.
According to Sen. Lightford, the notification would not disclose the identity of the infected person. That is an important privacy protection and I am glad to see it.
