Philip Franchine reports that when a hospital employee uploaded a picture of her workstation to her Facebook page, she did not realize that a patient’s personal information – including her Social Security number – was visible on the screen of her computer. The photo wasn’t up for long, but the patient reports that she has become the victim of ID theft:
An official at the University of Arizona Medical Center-South Campus acknowledged that the emergency room employee posted the patient’s personal information inadvertently on Facebook on June 9 after taking a photo of something else on her work station.
UAMC Director of Media and Corporate Communications Katie Riley said the photo was taken down in 30 minutes, the patient was notified, the employee was disciplined and emergency department employees were re-trained in privacy matters.
