Oh dear. Not realizing that a USB drive contained any personal information, an employee of Boston-based Wolf & Company mailed the drive back to their bookkeeper on March 11. Unfortunately, the envelope was damaged in mailing and the drive, which contained names and Social Security numbers in a QuikBook file, never arrived. No foul play is suspected and the drive is believed to still be somewhere in the USPS system.
As a result of this breach, which was reported to New Hampshire on March 24, the firm has implemented a policy prohibiting mailing of any unencrypted devices, regardless of whether anyone believes it contains any sensitive personal information or not.
Those affected have also been offered free credit monitoring.
