FL: Man gets prison for commiting tax fraud with vets’ stolen medical records

Posted on April 1, 2014 by Dissent

Elaine Silvestrini reports an update to a breach previously noted on this blog:

A convicted killer who used stolen veterans’ medical records to commit tax fraud was sentenced Monday to 7 1?2 years in federal prison Monday.

Alexander Lenox was arrested after Tampa police investigated the smell of marijuana at a room at the Motel 6 on East Fowler Avenue May 17, 2011. Inside, investigators found marijuana and evidence of tax fraud, including debit cards and records from James A. Haley Veterans Hospital. Many of the records were stamped as being from the hospital’s prosthetics unit, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Sara Sweeney.

Reportedly, this involved a corrupt employee who was selling records but who has not yet been charged.

This is not the only insider breach at James A. Haley I’ve covered on this blog. David Lewis, who sold patient information to support his drug habit, was sentenced in March to six years in prison.  And it’s not just paid employees who have stolen patient information from the V.A. hospital. In September 2013, this blog noted that a volunteer had been indicted on charges he stole patient information for a tax refund fraud scheme.
