According to KLTV, Amerigroup released the following statement yesterday:
On February 13, 2014, Amerigroup was made aware that an IRS agent and the Tallahassee, Florida, Police department discovered documents containing protected health information (PHI) in screen prints from an Amerigroup claims system while searching the car of a suspect on January 30, 2014.
The documents contained the full name, social security number, date of birth, city and state of residence, and Medicare or Medicaid identification numbers and original effective date of 183 Amerigroup Texas Medicaid and Medicare recipients.
Amerigroup has worked diligently since discovery of this matter to determine how the documents were created and to identify the individuals whose information was on the seized documents, as well as to identify members whose information may have been viewed when the documents were created. We continue to investigate the source of the documents and Amerigroup is cooperating with law enforcement in their investigation of this incident. The person who was arrested with the documents has never worked for Amerigroup. We have removed SSN’s from our claims system search results to help keep it from happening again.
As part of our investigation, we attempted to identify the steps that may have been taken in order to recreate the reports that were provided to us by the Tallahassee Police Department. We believe that the original search may have been run in April of 2012. As a result of these efforts, we have determined that an additional 74,082 members may have been impacted, and out of an abundance of caution we are also making notice to those additional members. Notification letters were mailed to these members on April 10, 2014. We are offering free identity protection services to all affected members for one year.
