At least 69 Vermont physicians and health care workers, many of them connected to Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, were targets of a nationwide tax scam involving identity theft and the filing of fraudulent federal income tax returns in their names.
“It’s mostly doctors, but it’s not restricted to them,” Paul Harrington, executive vice president of the Vermont Medical Society said Wednesday. “Nurse practitioners and physician assistants were affected, too.”
Nationally, hundreds of doctors and other medical workers in 18 states were victimized by the same fraud scheme, officials say. Those targeted included at least 58 doctors and others at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.
