You might think this is from one of the known major breaches that have been recently disclosed, but investigators don’t seem to think it is, and 170 victims have come forward in the past three days. WSFA has the story, and notes the reports started emerging on October 8:
All of the victims patronized Tallassee businesses like Walmart, grocery stores or gas stations before fraudulent charges for hundreds of dollars surfaced on their accounts. Counterfeit cards made from their credit and debit cards have been used across the country as well as internationally.
So what was the point of compromise here? We’ll have to wait to find out, it seems.
