MI: Indictments issued in Blue Cross Blue Shield identity theft case

Posted on March 10, 2015 by Dissent

Dustin Blitchok reports on another insider breach at a HIPAA-covered entity:

Eleven suspects were indicted on multiple identity theft-related charges Tuesday by the Detroit district attorney’s office in a case that accuses them of stealing the personal information of Blue Cross Blue Shield subscribers and using it to apply for credit and purchase merchandise in stores nationwide.

The indictment, issued after a multi-jurisdictional investigation, alleges that former Blue Cross Blue Shield employee Angela Patton, 47, of Belleville, printed screenshots with subscriber information and shared it with co-conspirators.

Among those charged alongside Patton are three Oakland County residents: Tynekwa Hill, 26, of Pontiac, Jeffrey Morton, 41, of Oak Park, Raymond Thomas, 40, of Oak Park and Aramona Coleman, 56, of Southfield.

The breach affected 5,514 Blue Care Network and Blue Cross Blue Shield members, whose names, birth dates and Social Security numbers were found in a suspect’s home when executing a search warrant.

The insurer will be sending out notification letters and offering those affected two years of credit protection services.
