CA: VA hospital in Long Beach may have improperly disposed of patients’ information

Posted on April 20, 2015 by Dissent

Leanne Suter reports:

Documents containing the personal information of veterans seeking treatment at the Veterans Affairs Long Beach Hospital may have been improperly disposed, Veterans Affairs officials said.

Army veteran and hospital patient Paulnhu Nguyen said he found a large stack of patient records containing personal information, such as social security numbers, date of births and full names, in a dumpster by the hospital after his appointment on Thursday.

We actually will find out more about this incident involving the VA Long Beach Healthcare System, but probably not until sometime later in May or June, when the VA issues its April monthly report to Congress on breaches.

I’m a veteran and I received another veteran’s VA medical record a couple of years ago. Took them back to the Temple, Texas VA. They promised that they would notify the other veteran. Hmm? I wonder if they really did?

I read their monthly reports, and it looks like they do make required notifications. Whether they made one in your specific case, I have no idea unless we could track back the exact month and year to find their reports, but in general, I think the VA is making a lot of notifications.
