What started as a routine purchase of a surplus county building has resulted in the discovery of thousands of medical records and allegations of theft.
Jerseyville resident Edward Crone bought the property at 505 S. Main St. from the county on March 19 — more than a year after it went on the market.
The building previously was managed by Boyd Hospital as an ambulance shed and for storage, as well as a clinic for a while.

Boyd Hospital CEO Debbie Campbell said that, while the hospital was aware of the sale of the building, it was not informed there was a buyer or of the closing date. She said the hospital was aware there were records being stored in the building but said nothing was compromised.

Crone said both he and the Realtor contacted the hospital several times to collect the medical records, both before and after the closing.
