722 UPMC Health Plan customers affected by data breach

Posted on July 14, 2015 by Dissent

Rich Lord reports:

UPMC Health Plan has suffered a data breach, and today notified its members, according to a spokeswoman for the insurer.

Neither Social Security numbers nor medical information was included in the lost material, wrote Gina Pferdehirt, director of public relations for UPMC Health Plan, in an email response to questions. “So while we take this seriously, in context the breach is very minor,” Ms. Pferdehirt wrote.

She did not provide further detail.

The entry for this incident on HHS’s public breach tool indicates that the breach was coded as “Unauthorized Access/Disclosure” of ePHI located in email.
