vBulletin patches and forces password reset as 0day is posted for sale

vBulletin.com is back online after a breach first reported on DataBreaches.net. In new developments, vBulletin forced a password reset and issued a patch while the 0day used to hack them was put for sale.

Password Reset

An announcement in their forum last night acknowledged the breach and explains:

vBulletin.com Password Reset

We take your security and privacy very seriously. Very recently, our security team discovered a sophisticated attack on our network. Our investigation indicates that the attacker may have accessed customer IDs and encrypted passwords on our systems. We have taken the precaution of resetting your account password. We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused but felt that it was necessary to help protect your account. To regain access to your account:

  1. Click forgot password link on login box
  2. Open email, follow instructions to click on new password link
  3. New temporary password will be emailed to you.

Please choose a new password and do not use the same password you used with us previously. We also highly recommend that you chose a password that you are not using on any other sites.

Note that based on screencaps provided to @Cyber_War_News by Coldzer0, their statement seems to underestimate the scope of the personal information that was acquired. We saw full names, email addresses, and security  questions and their answers. We also saw that Coldzer0 had access to a folder labeled “CC_info” that contained full credit card numbers (but no CVV codes).

We encourage Vbulletin and Internet Brands to issue a full statement on the scope and risks associated with the breach, including a statement as to how many users had their data accessed.

Security Patch

A second announcement last night indicated that a patch has been released for vBulletin 5 Connect:

Security Patch Release for vBulletin 5 Connect (Versions 5.1.4, through 5.1.9)

A security issue has been reported to us that affects the versions of vBulletin listed here: 5.1.4, 5.1.5, 5.1.6, 5.1.7, 5.1.8 and 5.1.9 We have released security patches to account for this issue. It is recommended that all users update as soon as possible.

You can download the patch for your version here: http://members.vbulletin.com/patches.php

As part of our maintenance of Cloud Sites, we will apply the patch to them. If necessary, we will contact Cloud Customers with further information.

0day Up for Sale?

Research by @Cyber_War_News uncovered the fact that “coldzer0” signed up yesterday on 0day.today and posted a 0day allegedly used to attack vBulletin as up for sale. It is unknown to us whether the patch issued by vBulletin makes the exploit unusable.

Foxit Software Update

In other related news, Foxit Software’s forum, which uses vBulletin, remains offline.
