The Rideau Centre says there was no privacy breach in its free WiFi network, despite a claim from a post on social media that shoppers’ email addresses were exposed online.
The incident, which was the subject of a recent Reddit post, purported to expose the email addresses of previous shoppers who have logged onto the public network.
To use the service, shoppers must sign in with one of their social media accounts or their email address.
In the field where users input their email addresses to log on the network, it auto-filled with email addresses of previous shoppers, according to user ARKTCT on Reddit.
But Cindy VanBuskirk, a spokeswoman for the Rideau Centre, said in an email statement there were no privacy issues with the free WiFi.
