NY: Woman charged with identity theft in misuse of co-workers’ information

Posted on February 4, 2016 by Dissent

I occasionally receive requests to remove an old article or redact people’s names. “I’ve done my time and am trying to turn my life around,” is the usual reason. And while I understand that, the policy of this site is NOT to remove old articles or redact names unless the person was acquitted. There is no right to be forgotten in the U.S. at this time, and frankly, crimes like identity theft tend to have a high recidivism rate. If nothing else, I use this site’s extensive database of old articles in researching whether someone or some entity has ever been involved in a previous breach.

So speaking of recidivism in identity theft, here’s today’s case in point, from Southold, New York:

Lakeida Walker-Dent, 39, of Shirley, New York  was charged with felony identity theft and insurance fraud. She’s ineligible for bond, the Southold Local reports, because of two prior felony convictions.  She’s accused of misusing her co-workers’ personal information to open accounts and auto insurance policies.

She was previously convicted of identity theft, according to police, who said the investigation is ongoing and additional charges are likely.

Walker-Dent is innocent of the new charges until proven guilty.

Another online source suggests that Walker-Dent was employed at Daniel Gale Sothebys Intl real estate brokers on Route 25 in Cutchogue.
