WRGB reports:
School officials are working to determine the source of a security breach they say had the potential to put student information at risk.
Administrators say they were alerted to a hack on a district server, and have reached out to police and a cyber-security firm to investigate the problem.
District officials say they will notify parents and students right away if it turns out that any student data was compromised.
And that’s all they wrote, for now.
Update: Later on Feb. 10, their web site was updated to include this statement:
Investigation finds no evidence of data leak
February 10, 2016 – On the afternoon of February 4, Troy City School District officials were alerted to a possible computer virus on a District server containing confidential student data.
After a comprehensive and thorough analysis performed by an independent, experienced cybersecurity firm, it has been determined there is NO evidence that any student data was lost, leaked, exposed or compromised in any fashion. This is due in part to the District’s own firewall systems and anti-virus protections.
The District considers student privacy and the security of student data to be critically important, and we will continue to do everything possible to safeguard student information. Learn more.
The FAQ explains that “a possible Trojan virus was detected on the SQL server by the District’s anti-virus protection systems. It remains unclear as to how it got there. The District’s anti-virus software performed as expected, and eradicated the threat. Further analysis may help the District determine the point of entry, but the cybersecurity team advises that this information is not necessary in order to remedy the problem.”
Good job, Troy CSD!
