Chicago-based South Loop CPA provides certified public accountant and tax preparation services to its clients.
On March 5, a password-protected laptop was stolen from the firm’s offices. The theft was discovered the same day, and South Loop CPA reported it promptly to law enforcement and began an investigation. That investigation revealed that W-2 forms and tax return information was on the stolen laptop, including names, Social Security numbers, addresses, wage information, and banking information.
On behalf of their client, Melissa Ventrone of Thompson Coburn LLP notified the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office on April 28, noting that in response to the theft, the firm was adding security cameras and locking portable computers to the desks and tables.
The number affected was not disclosed, but those affected have been offered 12 months of services through Equifax Personal Solutions.
