Personal health information taken from locked area: Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (UPDATE 1)

Posted on November 2, 2016 by Dissent

Katherine Dow reports:

The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority is set to release further details after personal health information was taken from a locked area earlier this month.

The authority said those affected have been notified.

This comes after the WRHA dealt with multiple security breaches in January. The first breach came on Jan. 14 when a bag containing health information was stolen from an on-duty nurse’s parked car in a downtown residential area. 67 client files could have been accessed.

Days later, the personal information of 25 home care patients was potentially affected after an employee’s vehicle was broken into in the downtown/Point Douglas area.

Update 1: CJOB has more details from the press conference today:

A paper file containing medical information for about 1000 patients has been stolen from a locked office at Health Sciences Centre.

Winnipeg Regional Health Authority Chief Operating Officer Real Cloutier says it happened in early October and police have been called in.

“We do have some footage in the general area that investigators are looking at,” says Cloutier. “It was a secure area. The room where the information was enclosed had a lock so we don’t think it was somebody from the public.”

He adds that while the breach is still considered very serious, the information that was stolen was fairly minimal including patient names, birth dates, file numbers and the medical procedure they had done at the hospital.
