Iowa Veterans Home warns nearly 3,000 of data breach after phishing incident

Posted on April 21, 2017 by Dissent

In February 2017, Google and the State of Iowa were the target of multiple phishing email campaigns. The Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) and the Iowa Veterans Home jointly responded and coordinated the  recovery of the incident and worked together to implement additional measures to prevent a similar occurrence in the future.

We cannot determine that any records were actually breached, however, in an overabundance of caution, we are including every possible resident and applicant, estimated at 2, 969.  The types of information included, but are not limited to: name, mailing address, phone number, medical information and social security number.

If you have questions, you can contact the toll-free number 1-800-645-4591 or visit the website at www.ivh.iowa.gov.  If you are concerned that your personal information may be used by another person, you may request free credit reports.  If you want more information, go to https://www.annualcreditreport.com or call toll-free 877-322-8228.
If you suspect that your identity has been stolen, please contact your local law enforcement officials or call the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division at 515-281-5926 or toll-free at 1-888-777-4590.  Go to:  www.IowaAttorneyGeneral.gov for information and brochures on both preventing and dealing with identity theft (click on “Protecting Consumers”).

According to a press release sent to local media, three IVH employees fell for phishing attempts and provided their credentials, giving the hacker access to email accounts. But also according to media reports, “Officials with the IVH said there is no evidence that the hacker accessed the three employee email accounts before access was blocked.”
