Park Ridge police are investigating how a computer belonging to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital ended up in the possession of a man claiming to reside in the Philippines, authorities said.
The desktop computer was reported stolen Jan. 8 after a man reportedly contacted the hospital to say he bought a computer that had belonged to Advocate and needed help unlocking it, said Deputy Police Chief Lou Jogmen.
No passcode or other assistance was reportedly provided to him, Jogmen said.
So the bad news is that the hospital didn’t seem to know that the computer had been stolen, but there is a lot of good news here, too: the computer did not contain patient information and it was encrypted.
