IL Ransomware attack hits Sycamore School District 427

Posted on December 4, 2019 by Dissent

Matthew N. Wells reports:

Visitors to the Sycamore School District 427 website Tuesday were greeted with a pop-up message saying the district had been the victim of a ransomware attack.

The message from D-427 Superintendent Kathy Countryman addressed the issue on the district’s website.

Read more on Daily Chronicle.

The name struck me as familiar, so I searched this site. Sure enough, Sycamore School District 427 had another malware incident ten years ago, although we never got a lot of details on that one.

The following notice currently appears on the district’s website:

Dear Sycamore Community School District 427 Community,

This morning the District discovered some of our internal technology servers have been the victim of ransomware. District staff is working to determine to what extent any information was compromised.

Upon immediate review, the District’s staff has determined the District’s email system, phone system, website, student information systems (Infinite Campus), and building alarm systems were not a part of this ransomware and are fully functioning. Additionally, District-owned Chromebooks and information stored within the District’s Google Suite for Education is not a part of this incident.

We continue to review any information that may have been compromised and will provide updates as this investigation continues.

Sincerely,

Kathy Countryman
Superintendent
Sycamore Community School District 427
