NY: Floral Park-Bellerose school district hit with ransomware attack

Posted on September 16, 2020 by Dissent

Elliott Weld reports:

Floral Park-Bellerose school district officials announced at their Board of Education meeting Monday that the district’s computer system had been infected with a type of malware known as “ransomware,” impeding its progress in delivering virtual education to students.

The report does not indicate what type of ransomware, nor any ransom demands. But it sounds like BOCES, which is the intermediary level in the state education system, had protocols in place that they followed when the district alerted them to the attack.  Despite that and despite having a usable backup to restore from, it will likely take weeks to recover from the attack.
