Posted on December 6, 2020 by Dissent

deVolkskrant reports (translated):

Municipality of Hof van Twente has fallen victim to a cyber attack. All computer systems of the municipality were shut down by the attack, the data stored on the servers was destroyed. This also includes privacy-sensitive information from residents, according to the municipality. It is unclear who the perpetrators are and what the motive may be.

The computer hack was discovered on Tuesday morning when council employees were unable to log in. After investigation, it turned out that strangers had gained access to the computer systems and blocked the servers. The Court of Twente has reported the cyber attack to the Ministry of the Interior, the Dutch Data Protection Authority and the Association of Netherlands Municipalities (VNG). The crime was also reported to the police.
