It: BCC Roma suffers cyberattack impacting 188 branches

Posted on April 29, 2021 by chum1ng0

Banco di Credito Cooperativo (BCC Roma) is one of the largest cooperative credit banks in Italy. Now Andrea Greco reports that operations at 188 branches have been impacted by a cyberattack.

BCC has posted a notice reassuring customers that although operations may be slower, the branches are operational (translation):

We inform our customers that the Agencies, although with slowed down operations due to line problems, are regularly open to the public.

We would also like to inform you that the technical problems that have slowed down normal operations are being resolved and that they will be gradually restored by Monday 3 May at the latest.

We remind you that the ATM is active and that the Home Banking services can be used directly from PC or smartphone, through which it is possible to perform all information and dispositive operations.

We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your cooperation.

The report on La Repubblica contains a screencap of a ransom note reportedly seen on the PCs of the bank. The note indicates that the attackers are the threat actors known as DarkSide.

Although the attack does not appear on DarkSide’s dedicated leak site, DarkSide recently told DataBreaches.net in an interview that they do not advertise their attacks until they are pretty sure that the victim is not going to pay them.
