WI: Adams-Friendship Area School District hit by ransomware

Posted on December 7, 2022 by Dissent

A statement on Adams-Friendship Area School District’s web site dated December 1 reads:

12/1/22 Internet & Network Outage Update
Dear AFASD Families,

On November 15th, 2022 we notified you that our network and internet services experienced a disruption. We have recently learned that unauthorized activity was detected within our environment on or about November 15, 2022. From an instructional point, almost all of our operations have been restored and student learning opportunities have continued without interruption. The District continues to work with a team of cyber-security experts to determine the extent of the unauthorized activity. If the investigation uncovers any compromised personal data, the District will provide appropriate notification to those affected.

We appreciate your patience, and we apologize for any inconvenience or concern this incident may cause you.

Respectfully,

Dr. Tom Wermuth

Today, Royal ransomware operators claim responsibility for the attack, but have provided no proof as yet.

Notice on Royal dedicated leak site dated December 7 names Adams-Friendship Area School District.
December 7th notice on Royal’s dedicated leak site names AFASD but provides no proof pack or details of the claimed attack.

It seems, then, that the district was attacked on November 15 but the district never publicly identified it as a ransomware attack and had not detected whether any personal information had been accessed or acquired. It sounds like there is more that we will be finding out over time.
